Standing Together in Community and Solidarity
48th Ward Neighbors,
As you may have heard, President Trump is once again threatening to deploy the National Guard to Chicago in what would amount to an unlawful, unconstitutional use of military force in a city that neither needs nor wants it.
Trump claims that federal military intervention is necessary to reduce crime in our city. We know that’s not true. The truth is that crime in our city is at an historic low. In the 48th ward alone, violent crime is down 22.7% compared to last year.
Trump claims that the National Guard will help Chicago respond to its housing crisis. The truth is that supporting our unhoused neighbors requires a constant, multifaceted approach rooted in empathy, service, and trauma-informed care.
Trump claims that Chicago needs federal immigration agents to target our neighbors. The truth is that immigrants and refugees are vital members of our community who we are committed to protecting, and that sanctuary cities are safer for everyone.
Our state and city governments are aligned on this: Chicago is not calling for military occupation and we are working together to evaluate all legal options to protect everyone who calls Chicago home.
To our neighbors in the 48th ward and beyond who are feeling frightened in the face of this administration’s values and actions: We see you, we hear you, and we will continue to fight with you. Our community is strong—bolstered by networks of people and organizations that truly care for one another—and it’s our community that keeps us safe. View our immigration resources page or contact our office for ways to get involved.
Yours in Community,
Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth
48th Ward Alderwoman
