Solidarity with Our Immigrant Neighbors
Chicago is—and will always remain—a Sanctuary City, because we believe in protecting our neighbors, honoring our shared humanity, and standing up for what is right. This week, I joined the overwhelming majority in City Council (39-11) to reject any attempt to weaken our Welcoming City Ordinance. Let me be clear: there is no place for fear or division in Chicago.
Today, I gathered with leaders from across the city at a hopeful and energizing event to stand united against the looming threat of mass deportations promised by the incoming federal administration and their so-called Border Czar. We pledged to work closely with schools, CPD commanders, and community organizations to protect our immigrant communities, keep families together, and ensure that every resident knows their rights.
Now is the time to lead with courage and compassion. We will continue to bring communities together in solidarity, reject lies and hateful rhetoric meant to divide us, and empower ourselves with truth and action. We will defend civil liberties for all—regardless of how someone came to this city—because Chicago doesn’t just welcome people, we fight for our neighbors.
The path ahead may be uncertain, but our resolve is not. Chicago will stand tall, stronger and fiercer than ever, to ensure this city remains a beacon of hope and safety for all. No one stands alone in this city—and no one will be left behind.
