48th WARD GREEN COUNCIL: FIRST MEETING RECAP
Thanks to everyone who came to our February 6 Green Council meeting! Read on for a brief summary of what we discussed and worked on:
OVERVIEW OF GREEN COUNCIL STRUCTURE, MISSION AND VALUES:
In between our December 2024 and February 2025 meetings, we encouraged Green Council members to sign up for either the Engagement, Education, or Policy team. During this month’s meeting, we went over the structure of these three teams and how they will work together toward our mission and values.
Mission Statement: The mission of the 48th Ward Green Council is to develop a community vision for sustainability in the 48th ward and carry it out by 1) advising the alderwoman to support strong environmental policy, 2) providing our community with the requisite education and resources for sustainable living 3) uplifting the work of existing environmental organizations and initiatives.

PRESENTATION FROM THE EDGEWATER ENVIRONMENTAL COALITION:
Representatives from the Edgewater Environmental Coalition (EEC) presented on their 2025 initiatives and ways to get involved. Their four themes for this year are Policy Advocacy & Engagement, Gardens & Food Systems, Nature-Based Solutions & Shoreline Advocacy, and Sustainable Buidling & Housing Advocacy.

TEAM BREAKOUT SESSIONS
For the last half of the meeting, we broke into three small teams:
Policy: Reviewed community visioning survey results to align on key focus areas
Education: Begun work to create solar/composting educational materials
Engagement: Review community visioning survey results to begin planning public events.
