Ward Night Recap: July 21, 2026
Thanks to everyone who attended our July 21, 2026 Ward Night. Here’s a summary of what we discussed:
PROTECTING RENTERS ORDINANCE. Many neighbors came to Ward Night to discuss the Protecting Renters Ordinance (PRO). The PRO is a modernization of Chicago's 40-year-old Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance (RLTO) that addresses junk fees, rental registries, and just cause for eviction, among other things. Neighbors in attendance were largely supportive of the PRO, with some raising concerns about the disparate effects of the ordinance on large vs. small landlords. Due to neighbors interest in the ordinance, our office is working to schedule a public forum to discuss the topic further. When scheduled, we will announce the meeting in our newsletter.
EMANUEL CONGREGATION / FERN HILL REDEVELOPMENT. Emanuel Congregation has been a beloved neighbor and part of our Edgewater community for over 70 years, but their building is at the end of its useful life. To secure Emanuel’s future in Edgewater for years to come, they’ve partnered with Fern Hill to develop a new synagogue facility with housing. Following our extensive community engagement process—including meetings with the Chicago Park District, neighbors, and relevant community organizations—Ald. Manaa-Hoppenworth is allowing the proposal to proceed to the next step of the Planned Development process. Learn more about this project here.
During Ward Night, a neighbor asked about getting involved with the Interfaith Park Advisory Council and proposed an idea for a dog run within the development.
1114 W BRYN MAWR. Our office has been working to landmark the Bryn Mawr Historic District. Earlier this year, three permit applications for the demolition of 1114 W Bryn Mawr, 1106 W Bryn Mawr, and 5614 N Winthrop were brought before the Commission on Chicago Landmarks (CCL). The application for 1114 W Bryn Mawr was preliminarily denied due to the property’s inclusion in the Bryn Mawr Historic District.
Multiple neighbors showed their support at Ward Night for the demolition of the building at 1114 W Bryn Mawr, expressing support for the construction of new housing within the historic region.
TRAFFIC AT BROADWAY & DEVON/SHERIDAN. The intersection near Loyola’s campus where Broadway meets Sheridan as Sheridan becomes Devon is very busy with cars and pedestrians. One neighbor identified the need for an additional merge sign where one lane of traffic ends. Our team will look into this problem in collaboration with the 49th Ward, who we share our northern border with.
