Landmarking Bryn Mawr: May 7 CCL Meeting Recap
Three permit applications for the demolition of 1114 W Bryn Mawr, 1106 W Bryn Mawr, and 5614 N Winthrop were brought before the Commission on Chicago Landmarks (CCL) last week on May 7th. These applications were submitted as part of the planned mixed-use residential project at 5602 N Winthrop by developer Harlem Irving Companies.
Given the preliminary landmark status of the Bryn Mawr Avenue District, the Department of Planning and Development (DPD) Historic Preservation Division presented an initial report, stating that the proposed landmark designation of this District “supports the City’s overall planning goals and is consistent with the City’s governing policies and plans.”
DPD also presented reports on each permit application and recommended that permit applications for 5614 N Winthrop and 1106 W Bryn Mawr be approved. These properties are non-contributing to the district, due to extensive loss of historic features as a result of alterations made outside of the District's 1897-1929 period of significance. DPD recommended preliminary disapproval of the permit application for 1114 W Bryn Mawr (constructed in 1909) because of its status as a contributing building to the District that retains its character-defining historic features.
The CCL voted in alignment with DPD’s recommendation to approve 2 demolition permits applications (#5614, #1106) and preliminarily disapprove 1 permit application (#1114). CCL's final recommendation to City Council will follow the public hearing on the matter. Alderwoman Manaa-Hoppenworth encouraged the developer to work with City staff to find solutions forward in alignment with the preliminary landmark status of the Bryn Mawr Ave District.
According to the Landmarks Ordinance, preliminary disapproval of the permit application for demolition of a contributing building at 1114 W Bryn Mawr triggers an expedited 90-day consideration of both the landmark designation for the Bryn Mawr Avenue District and the #1114 demolition application. The public hearing will be scheduled, ideally for the week of June 15th. Please stay tuned to our newsletter for more updates and an announcement of the public hearing date when it is confirmed.
