Sylvia Family Shelter in Uptown is part of a $40 million capital improvement project to modernize homeless shelter facilities throughout the city. This funding is the largest local shelter capital investment in Chicago’s history. The funding will support major improvements to more than 750 permanent shelter beds across the city, such as ADA accessibility, modernizing aging infrastructure and systems, and developing 350+ non-congregate beds so individuals and families have a private sleeping room and bathroom with secure storage space for their belongings.

Research shows that non-congregate shelters in Chicago and elsewhere improve health and housing outcomes for residents compared with congregate shelter settings. Residents can learn more about the Shelter Infrastructure Initiative and access shelter services through DFSS's website or by emailing dfss@cityofchicago.org.
