Elected School Board Voter Information

This year, Chicago will be electing school board members for the first time. The city has been divided into 10 school districts with roughly 275,000 residents in each. The 48th ward is represented by districts 2 and 4.

You can see the borders of those districts above or on our 48th ward map here. To determine which district you are in, look up your voter registration information at the Chicago Board of Elections website here.

The 2024 election is a transition election — voters will be electing half of the school board and the mayor will be appointing the other half. Each district is divided into two subdistricts, A and B. After the election, whichever subdistrict the elected board member is from, the mayor will appoint the second board member from the other subdistrict. (For instance, if the elected member in District 4 is from subdistrict 4a, the mayor will appoint the other member from subdistrict 4b).

In the 2026 election, Chicago voters will elect board members from the subdistricts where the member was appointed in 2024 and, going forward from then, the entire school board, as well as the board president, will be elected.
