2026 Budget Statement: October 16, 2025

Mayor Brnadon Johnson giving his budget address to a full city council chamber

Dear Neighbors,

On October 16, the Mayor presented his proposed budget for 2026 to the City Council. As a council, we are facing a number of challenges this budget season including rising costs, federal attacks, and a $1.15 billion budget gap. We are gearing up for a challenging budget season that is sure to require a number of tough compromises. You can view the 2026 budget overview here.

The proposed $16.6 billion budget focuses on six priorities:

  • Make Chicago the Safest Big City

  • Make Chicago the Most Affordable Big City

  • Invest in our Children, Youth, and Young Adults

  • Support Economic Group and Workforce Development

  • Protect our Environment and Enhance Transportation

  • Balance An Equitable Budget

Budget hearings begin next Tuesday, October 21 at 10am in the Council Chambers, and are open to the public either in-person or via livestream at the City Clerk website. Learn more about attending the meetings here and view the full hearing schedule here.

To prepare for the budget hearings, I have been talking with my fellow alderpeople, constituents, and advocacy groups about priorities. I participated in mid-year budget hearings with the city departments, a first in recent memory for the City of Chicago. I will be hosting a Virtual Budget Town Hall in the coming weeks to discuss the details of the 2026 budget with 48th ward neighbors.

I hope to pass a balanced budget that reflects our values, supports working families, and sets our city up for a successful 2026 and beyond.

Yours in Community,
