On Friday, September 19, 2025, at the ICE temporary detention facility in Broadview, Illinois, federal agents escalated their assault on peaceful protest and free speech.

Without provocation, agents fired tear gas, rubber bullets, and pepper balls into the crowd-often aiming at people’s heads.

Protesters, family members of those detained, journalists, legal advocates, elected officials, and community members exercising their First Amendment rights were all attacked. People were left with lacerations, head injuries, lung issues, and chemical burns, as well as deep emotional trauma. Ten people were arrested. All have since been released, but the harm remains.

The reckless actions of the federal agents are the latest in an intentional effort by the Trump Administration to silence dissent and normalize xenophobia, authoritarianism, and fascism. It is part of the same system of violence that criminalizes immigrants and tears families apart.

That’s why our fight for justice continues. We remain vigilant and committed to rapidly responding to ICE sightings, defending our neighbors from deportation, and dismantling the systems that criminalize migration and poverty. As elected officials representing people at every level of government in the state of Illinois, we will use every tool available to protect our communities.

To everyone on the frontlines: keep speaking out and keep showing up. We’ve got your back-and together, we will build a country where all of us are safe, healthy, and free.
