Ward Night Recap: October 7, 2025
Thanks to everyone who attended our October 7 Ward Night. Here’s a brief summary of what we discussed:
Broadway Land Use Framework. Alds. Manaa-Hoppenworth, Martin, and Clay have introduced a series of zoning ordinances in City Council in an effort to simplify the zoning along Broadway making it easier for small businesses to move and expand and for developers to build affordable housing near our new CTA redline stations.
These ordinances are a reflection of our community-built Broadway Land Use Framework which was developed through an extrensive community process and prioritizes pedestrian-friendly mixed-use development.
The zoning ordinances will be heard by the Zoning Committee on October 14 and by City Council on October 16.
To show your support for Broadway rezoning, send us an email at info@the48thward.org, email the Director of the Chicago Committee on Zoning Nicole Wellhausen at Nicole.Wellhausen@CityofChicago.org
Pedestrian Safety on Broadway. We have three pedestrian refuge islands coming to Broadway and the new speed camera in front of the Broadway Armory issued over 15,000 tickets in its first 30 days. We’re always looking for ways to improve pedestrian safety. Continue reaching out to our office to report dangerous vehicle activity.
Green Social Housing. Green Social Housing is sustainable, affordable housing that does not depend on federal subsidy. Alderwoman Manaa-Hoppenworth championed the GSH ordinace which passed City Council in May.
Granville Greenway. The Granville Greenway and other traffic calming initiatives are in place and working to reduce vehicle speeds and make the route safer for cyclists. Read more about this project here. Please report any continuing unsafe vehicle behavior (ignoring one-ways, blocking bike lanes, etc).
This was the final Ward Night meeting of 2025. Keep a lookout in our newsletter for other ways to stay engaged including town halls and upcoming Participatory Budgeting engagement.
