Support for Unhoused Neighbors
In light of the recent Supreme Court Decision regarding the rights and protections of unhoused people, we'd like to provide an update on our work to support unhoused neighbors in the 48th ward and reiterate our values in regards to this work.
Our office firmly believes that housing is a human right. We are committed to providing shelter and essential services, such as detox services and identification services, and more to those in need.
The Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS) HOP team, along with the Lincoln Park Social Services outreach team, conducts weekly outreach to unsheltered residents in the 48th Ward. This includes the Wilson/Lawrence/LSD viaducts, The Meadows, Lincoln Park, surrounding parks, along Sheridan Rd, and other smaller locations. Additionally, the DFSS Mobile Health Unit visits bi-monthly, providing health assessments, treatment services, and vaccinations. We also conduct regular cleanups of unsafe and abandoned tents, with the next cleanup scheduled for July 19.
Last year, we housed over 60 individuals last year through Accelerated Moving Events (AMEs), which are recognized for their effectiveness by the Office of Inspector General. Read more about 48th Ward AMEs here.
