Ald. Manaa-Hoppenworth Co-Sponsors “Stop Hate Littering” Ordinance
Alderwoman Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth has signed on as a co-sponsor of the “Stop Hate Littering” ordinance, which makes it illegal to leave any material on private property without the owner’s permission if it could intimidate, defame, threaten physical harm or violence, or incite hate crimes. Anyone caught “hate littering,” which includes everything from stickers to fliers, will be fined between $500 and $1,000 for each offense.
Read the full text of the ordinance, which passed in the Chicago City Council on July 17, 2024 and goes into effect on July 27, here.
The Alderwoman had previously co-sponsored the “Chi Vs. Hate” ordinance, which created a "hate incident" category for non-criminal acts that are motivated by bias against someone's race, color, gender identity, age, religion, disability, national origin, ancestry, or sexual orientation.
