Dear 48th Ward Neighbors,
Due to a government shutdown at the federal level, SNAP funds are being withheld from tens of thousands of Chicagoans who rely on them to buy groceries. At the same time, new SNAP eligibility and work requirements will go into effect on December 1, causing many people and families to lose their benefits altogether. In the 48th ward, we believe that no one should have to wonder where their next meal will come from, so we’re collaborating with city departments, community organizations, and our neighbors to build a network of support.
For those able, consider donating your time and resources to help ensure no one in our community goes hungry. Organizations providing food assistance in the 48th ward include Care for Real, Care for Friends, Vivent Health, Groceryland, and Edgewater Mutual Aid.
For work or volunteer opportunities in order to meet the new SNAP eligibility requirements, visit the American Job Center at Truman or one of the many non-profits in our community that are seeking volunteers including Care for Real, Care for Friends, Chinese Mutual Aid Association, SEAC, Centro Romero, Nourishing Hope, Groceryland, and the 48th Ward Office.
I will continue advocating for investments in our social safety nets—including SNAP—and pushing back against policies that hurt our most vulnerable neighbors. I am proud to live in the 48th ward where we rise to the occasion to support each other. Please continue caring for one another and reaching out to my office for resources and support.
Yours in Community,
Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth
48th Ward Alderwoman

HOW YOU CAN HELP
IMPLEMENT A SNAP VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
One of the changes coming to SNAP eligibility is an 80 hr per month work/volunteer requirement for most adults ages 18-64. We recently partnered with Care for Friends to provide a training on how to establish a volunteer program to help SNAP recipients meet this requirement.
DONATE OR VOLUNTEER AT CARE FOR REAL
Care for Real is a local organization helping neighbors every day. As SNAP changes lead to increased need, CFR is seeking donations and volunteers to help package and distribute food and assist with daily operations.
DONATE TO THE CARE FOR FRIENDS CORNER STORE PANTRY
The Care for Friends Corner Store is a food pantry where neighbors can pick up essentials and ingredients in between grocery runs. Visit them at 5749 N Kenmore, and learn more about their other food services on their website.
Interested in donating to the Care for Friends pantry? See their wishlist here.
DONATE TO SWIFT ELEMENTARY’S MINI PANTRY
Swift Elementary School is collecting non-perishable items, toiletries, and Zelle donations for their pantry to benefit neighbors facing food insecurity. See the full wishlist here. Drop off food items at 5900 N Winthrop.
