Our office has secured $1.4 million in funding for pedestrian safety improvements at Senn High School and the neighboring streets. This project was a close collaboration between the 48th ward office, the Senn High School administration, neighbors, and the Complete Streets team at the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT). 48th ward neighbors voted to allocate $250,000 towards a raised intersection at Ardmore and Glenwood as part of Participatory Budgeting 2024.
The work will begin as soon as Friday, June 5th. The improvements include the following:
Raised intersection at Thorndale and Glenwood
Raised intersection at Ardmore and Glenwood
Bump-outs at Glenwood and Rosedale
Raised cross-walk at Greenview and Thorndale
During construction, the intersections will be closed and a detour set up. Temporary “No Parking” signs will be periodically installed as required.
Raised cross-walks and intersections encourage drivers to slow down before the crosswalk, enable people walking to easily cross the street at sidewalk level, and make people crossing more visible to drivers. Bump outs make streets narrower to slow down drivers, make it easier for drivers to see people waiting to cross the street, and encourage turning drivers to reduce speeds at intersections.
