Safe 48 Health & Safety Update

Our office is outraged and disheartened by recent gun violence incidents that have taken place in the ward. Public safety is our top priority, and right now, we don’t all feel safe. For too long, policy at the city, state, and national levels has failed to protect our communities from senseless loss of life due to guns. We want to take this moment to thank our neighbors who have been partners with us in this important work, and to share what we’re doing to build the safe and welcoming community that we all deserve:

At the 48th ward office, our strategy is to use a trauma-informed lens to disrupt the cycle of violence. To do this, we focus on:

  • Youth-Focused Initiatives: Providing our youth with resources and opportunities; supporting programming that empowers young people to be active and engaged members of our community.

  • Addressing Root Causes: Addressing the root cause of violence with workforce development, housing, and economic development.

  • Increasing Community Policing: Collaborating with CPD on a community policing approach (i.e. foot and bike patrol).

  • Collaboration with Public Safety Partners: Collaborating with our public safety partners such as the State’s Attorney’s Community Justice Center (North) to help neighbors advocate for further action on cases that impact our ward.

Our Safe 48 Health and Safety Plan explains how we collaborate with government agencies, community-based organizations, and neighbors to achieve these goals. Read the full plan on our website.

We recognize the importance of transparent communication and community involvement; our goal is to provide a variety of ways for our neighbors to stay informed and engaged. We encourage you to join your next Beat meeting or District Council meeting – to find information about these meetings, see our Services page. You may also consider joining your local block club; find information about block clubs in the 48th ward on this interactive map. Click here to opt-in to receive crime alerts from our office.

We encourage neighbors to continue reaching out to our office via email (info@the48thward.org), phone (773-784-5277), or by visiting our office at 1129 W Bryn Mawr during regular business hours

Our community keeps us safe. Thank you for working with us to improve the safety of the 48th ward.
