October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), a nationwide campaign to raise awareness of domestic violence and share resources. Earlier this year, our community was shattered by the loss of an 11-year old child due to an unthinkable act of domestic violence. We continue to grieve the loss of our beloved son, friend, and classmate as we work to ensure that justice is served and prevent incidents like this from happening in the future.
This month, we recognize those who have felt the impacts of domestic and gender-based violence by highlighting the resources that are available to keep people safe and the prevention work we're doing as a community and city. As we enter into a challenging budget season, I am committed to protecting and increasing resources to fight against all forms of domestic and gender-based violence.
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, call the Illinois Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-877-863-6338 or access other hotline resources here. See below for more DVAM resources and events happening this month.
Yours in Community,
Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth
