COMMUNICATIONS INTERN JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Communications Intern is an essential member of the 48th Ward Aldermanic Office. They work with the communications manager and other ward staff to keep systems up to date and running smoothly by taking and organizing photos, updating various aspects of the 48th Ward website, and providing support to other teams as needed.
As part of this role, the communications intern will be responsible for communicating with various stakeholders via the phone and email and will work closely with other staff members in the office. Strong ethics, transparency, and an actionable commitment to diversity are requirements of anyone working for Alderwoman Manaa-Hoppenworth.
This role is part of the Aldermanic Summer Internship program for 2026. It will be for 6 weeks, and the anticipated start date is June 22, 2026. The salary is $15.80/hour. The internship is 20 hours/week.
This communications intern is expected to work onsite in the aldermanic office and reports to the Communications Manager. The Summer Intern hours are M-F between 9am-5pm; the schedule is determined by the intern and manager.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Stores and organize photos taken by ward staff on shared Google Drive
Updates the 48th Ward Community Events Calendar
Takes before and after photographs of local construction projects
Distributes printed flyers throughout the ward with help from volunteers
Copy-edits blog posts
Assists Neighborhood Services and Development Teams as needed
Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Reside in the City of Chicago.
Ability to work in a face-paced, multi-faceted environment with many challenges and opportunities.
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
Strong photography skills (no advanced camera technology required)
Strong computer skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and database management.
Ability to work with a broad array of stakeholders including constituents, elected officials, community representatives, advocates, government agencies, etc.
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with sensitive and difficult situations.
Bilingual preferred.
Highly responsive public servant.
