Celebrating BHM with Public Departments and Organizations
As we celebrate Black History Month, be sure to enjoy some of the resources and events that our agencies and departments have provided for us to continue to celebrate Black history all year, because Black history is Chicago history.
Celebrate with Chicago Public Schools
Visit the Chicago Public Schools' Black History is Chicago History page to experience compiled photos, videos, and written histories of Black leaders in education and the city at large — from a docu-short on John Baptiste Point du Sable; to the first Black alderman, Oscar DePriest; to an exploration of Chicago schools named after influential Black figures in our city.
Celebrate with the Chicago Public Library
The Chicago Public Library still has many events to attend in the next month, including book club meetings, conversations with authors, and creativity workshops.
And because Black history is not confined to a single month, the library has provided us reading lists to last us all year for Kids, Teens, and Adults; as well as a compilation of recent highlights in the library collection.
Celebrate with the Chicago Park District
The weather is warming up just in time to attend a Black History Month celebration at one of the many public parks in the city! The Chicago Park District has organized their concert and movie series to celebrate Black artists.
If you cannot attend an event in person, consider watching Divine Nine in the Parks, a film about the representation of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), composed of the "Divine Nine" Black fraternities and sororities, at the Chicago Park District.
