Public Safety Reminders for Sheridan Road

We want to share two important public safety concerns along Sheridan Road brought to our attention by CPD.

The 20th Police District has identified an individual who may be targeting buildings with keyless entry systems. It appears they are searching online for master codes that were not changed after installation, allowing them to gain access.

Once inside, the individual reportedly scopes out storage areas in advance of break-ins They later return with large bags, stealing items such as bikes. In one instance, a single building was targeted five times in less than 24 hours—at all hours of the day.

To help prevent these break-ins, we encourage property managers and condo associations to:

  • Change default or master codes on keyless entry systems.

  • Monitor security footage and report suspicious activity.

  • Advise residents to stay vigilant—if someone is seen inside with a face covering and large duffel bags, and they don’t appear to belong there, please call 911 immediately.

The 24th Police District informed us of an armed car jacking on the 6300 block of Sheridan. The incident occurred just before midnight. Preliminary investigations show that the vehicle was then used in a robbery on the 6500 block of Glenwood.

CPD has asked us to share the following Carjacking Prevention Tips (see helpful graphics at the bottom of this post):

  • Don’t Be Surprised:

    • Frequent carjacking locations include anywhere a driver slows down or stops including residential driveways, parking lots, gas stations, ATMs, and stop lights.

  • Be Aware:

    • Bump and Run: You are rear ended and a passenger from the vehicle that bumps you jumps into your driver seat when you get out to assess the damage. Note their description and call 911.

    • Stranded Motorist: Do not stop for apparently stranded strangers along the road.

  • Think Ahead:

    • Make it a habit to enter your car, lock your doors, and immediately drive away.

    • Look around for suspicious activity before entering your vehicle.

    • Park in well-lit areas

    • Keep windows up and locked

    • Don’t get boxed in.

    • Keep your cell phone in your pocket

    • Trust your instincts.

  • Smart 911

    • Create a Smart 911 profile and include your vehicle information.

CPD is flyering the immediate area with this information. If you are the victim of a crime, try to remember the suspect(s) description and their vehicle description (if they have one), and immediately call 911.

We appreciate our community’s efforts in keeping our neighborhood safe.
