Message from Ald. Manaa-Hoppenworth Regarding Utility Mailers and CABO
You may have recently received a cryptic and misleading mailer stating that your alderperson wants to increase your utility rates. These mailers are part of the gas lobby’s efforts to continue using fossil fuels which contribute to climate change. They were sent to constituents of alders who support the Clean and Affordable Buildings Ordinance (CABO), a piece of legislation that puts community interests at the forefront by tackling one of the greatest sources of carbon emissions in the city: buildings. Read more about the ordinance here.
CABO aims to eliminate carbon-based appliances from new developments which will relieve the burden of utility rates in the long term and keep our air cleaner and our environment safer for us and our future generations. Peoples Gas, whose historic rate increase was recently rejected by the Illinois Commerce Commission, is vehemently opposed to this ordinance. There are no pending votes on CABO as the Committee on Environmental Protection and Energy continues its research to ensure that we have the best possible policy ready for Chicago.
I’m committed to fighting climate change and championing sustainability at every level.
Yours in community,
Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth
48th Ward Alderwoman
