BYO Containers for Takeaway Food and Drink
Did You Know?
Illinois HB 2086 clarifies that reusables, including customer-owned containers that are constructed for reuse, can be used and filled at restaurants, food trucks, farmers’ markets, festivals, and more!
What This Means for Customers:
Examples of reusables include stainless steel to-go containers, tumblers, water bottles, and straws; bamboo utensil sets and cotton bags. Remember to clean your reusables prior to filling!
Dine at restaurants that offer reusables for on-site dining and allow you to bring your own to-go item.
Bring approved reusables with you when you go out to eat or attend a festival. Always be prepared!
Spread the word to your family and friends and encourage them to bring reusables with them too.
What This Means for Restaurants:
Besides allowing approved reusables to be filled, here are some other ways restaurants can support this initiative:
Encourage customers to bring their own reusables by providing a small discount when they bring them in!
Sell approved reusables (with brand name if desired) for customers to purchase when ordering to-go!
Offer a deposit-refund program where customers can rent reusables and return them once finished.
