Coming Soon: Berwyn Neighborhood Greenway

At our recent Infrastructure Town Hall, we were excited to announce the Berwyn Neighborhood Greenway project: a 2.5 mile family-friendly bike route connecting the North Shore Channel Trail (NSCT) to the Lakefront Trail (LFT).

PROJECT DESCIPTION

From Damen Avenue to the LFT, the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) is installing a contraflow bike lane. This will formalize two-way biking on Berwyn, better organizing the street for all users. This project will create a 2.5 mile family-friendly route between the NSCT and the LFT, while providing direct access to the Berwyn CTA station; the Clark Street commercial corridor; and neighborhood greenways on Leavitt, Ravenswood, Glenwood, and Kenmore/Winthrop.

PROJECT BENEFITS

  • Lower vehicle speeds and higher comfort for all users of the street.

  • Provides a low-stress alternative to Foster Avenue where families and children can feel comfortable biking.

  • A better organized street by providing dedicated space for everyone.

  • Improved access to the lakefront and other community destinations, such as local businesses and the Berwyn CTA station.

  • New traffic signal at Ashland to help people walking and biking cross the busy intersection.

REMINDER: HOW TO SAFELY USE NEIGHBORHOOD GREENWAYS

  • Contraflow Movement: ride in the contraflow lane, marked by the dashed yellow lines. With

  • Motor Vehicle Movement: ride in the middle of the travel lane with the direction of travel.

  • In addition to checking both ways for people walking, look for people on bikes in both directions, especially when accessing driveways, alleys, and parking.

  • Street direction does not change for people driving.
