Pedestrian Safety Initiatives

On December 29, 2024 a hit and run on Broadway and Elmdale left one of our senior citizens in critical condition. Addressing long-time pedestrian safety concerns along Broadway is one of our top priorities. Some of our ongoing pedestrian safety initiatives include:

  • Collaboration with IDOT and CDOT to build three refuge islands on Broadway at Hood, Rosedale, and Norwood.

  • Collaboration with CDOT to install a new speed camera and a red light camera on Broadway near the Broadway Armory.

  • Cosponsoring Vision Zero Traffic Safety Legislation Package

  • Speed indicators along Broadway (complete)

  • Refuge island at Broadway and Winona (complete)

In addition to focusing on Broadway, we have active pedestrian safety initiatives in the works on Sheridan, Glenwood, and Granville. To submit a request for pedestrian safety infrastructure improvements near you (i.e. bump outs, pedestrian islands, speed humps, refuge islands, etc), please use this form, and the community will vote on projects as part of Participatory Budgeting in the spring.
